Marlins manager Skip Schumaker will reportedly be free agent after season: Could he be Yankees replacement for Aaron Boone in 2025?

If Aaron Boone can’t live up to the lofty aspirations of the New York Yankees organization in the final year of his contract, Skip Schumaker could quickly be thrown into the speculation since he will surprisingly be a free agent after this season.

Heading into the MLB games today, the New York Yankees are riding high with a 9-2 record that is not only enough to take the top spot in the American League East but is tied for the best record in MLB — with the Pittsburgh Pirates of all teams. So manager Aaron Boone’s seat on the dugout bench has certainly cooled to start the season.

However, there is a lot of pressure on Boone as he coaches out the final year of his contract with the team. After finishing in last place in 2023, it seems like there is an unspoken edict of World Series or bust for the 51-year-old. If the organization has to look for his replacement in the winter, one name to keep in mind is Skip Schumaker.

The Miami Marlins manager won the National League Manager of the Year award in 2023 for the outstanding job he did and over the weekend USA Today MLB insider Bob Nightengale revealed this could be his last season in Florida.

“Skip Schumaker, the NL manager of the Year last season, is a free agent after the year. The Marlins originally had a club option on Schumaker in 2025, but they agreed to void the option during contract talks this past winter,” Nightengale wrote. “Alex Cora of the Boston Red Sox and Schumaker certainly would be the hottest names on the managerial free-agent market.”

What the New York Yankees do in the offseason when it comes to who their skipper is after 2024 all hinges on how they finish this season. After seven years, Boone has an impressive 518-336 record and has reached the playoffs in a tough AL East every season except for last year.

However, the standards are always high in New York and the manager has not taken the always expensive roster to a World Series during his time on the bench. If they don’t make the ALCS this year he is likely done in Pinstriples. But is Skip Schumaker a fit for the Yankees?

After 11 seasons in the league as a player, Schumaker took over an MLB dugout for the first time last year and did a stellar job. However, after a surprise season in 2023, the Marlins have gotten off to a 1-10 start in 2024. If Miami has a disastrous last-place finish this year, he could hurt his value to a level, but the Marlins are always a club building a roster on a budget and Schumaker will have to do the best with what he has been given.

Considering how high the expectations are in New York and the team would be moving on from another first-time manager, chances are they would pass on bringing in Schumaker after just two years doing the job. That is unless he somehow took the Marlins back to the playoffs for a second straight season. That could certainly chance perceptions even more and make him looking like a manager diamond in the Florida rough.
