Mark Rypien’s 1987 Super Bowl ring is up for auction

Mark Rypien’s 1987 Super Bowl XXII ring is up for bid at Goldin Auctions.

Rypien was a rookie during Washington’s championship season but didn’t play in the team’s 42-10 victory over the Denver Broncos. He reportedly sold the ring in 2013 and the current owner has apparently put the ring back up for sale.

Per the TMZ report, the bidding starts at $15,000. And, what perfect timing, since Washington’s chances of earning Super Bowl 50 rings died when they lost to the Green Bay Packers in Sunday’s Wild Card showdown.

After Rypien’s rookie year, he started for Washington for the next five seasons leading the team to three postseason playoffs including a Super Bowl championship in 1991. With that ring likely being nearer and dearer to his heart, considering he was the team’s MVP, it would be quite shocking to see the 1991 version surface in the open market.

With the 1987 ring available to the highest bidder, it should be interesting to see what the ring fetches in the end.
