Leafs acquire Jake McCabe, Sam Lafferty from Blackhawks

The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired defenseman Jake McCabe, forward Sam Lafferty and two future draft picks from the Blackhawks on Monday, sending forwards Joey Anderson and Pavel Gogolev to Chicago.

The Blackhawks also get a conditional first-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft and a second-round selection in 2026. The first-round pick is top 10 protected.

The draft picks heading to Toronto are a conditional fifth-round selection in the 2024 NHL Draft and a conditional fifth-round selection in 2025. Also, the Blackhawks will retain 50 percent of McCabe’s salary.

McCabe, 29, has 20 points (two goals, 18 assists) in 55 games with the Blackhawks this season. In 483 career regular season games with the Sabres (2013-21) and Blackhawks, McCabe has totaled 119 points (24 goals, 95 assists).

Lafferty, 27, has tallied 10 goals and 21 points in 51 games with Chicago in 2022-23. He has appeared in 191 career games with Pittsburgh (2019-21) and Chicago and has 53 total points (21 goals, 32 assists).

Anderson, 24, split his time this season between the Maple Leafs and Toronto Marlies of the AHL. With the Maple Leafs, he appeared in 14 games and produced two goals and three points. In 30 games with the Marlies, he had 27 points (14 goals, 13 assists).

He has played in 72 NHL games with the New Jersey Devils (2018-20) and Maple Leafs and has 10 goals and six assists.

Gogolev, a 23-year-old from Russia, has yet to appear in an NHL game. In 33 games this season with the Newfoundland Growlers of the ECHL, he has 48 points (21 goals, 27 assists).

The Maple Leafs (37-15-8, 82 points) enter play Monday in second place in the Atlantic Division. The Blackhawks have the second-worst record in the Western Conference.
