Losers of five consecutive games after Monday night’s defeat at the hands of the Dallas Cowboys, it looks like the New York Giants’ season is going nowhere fast.
Rookie quarterback Daniel Jones continues to be a mistake ready to happen. A talent-stricken defense simply has not stepped up on the other side of the ball.
It led to second-year head coach Pat Shurmur calling outs his players in a big way.
“Guys understand those mistakes are unacceptable and if individuals don’t get it corrected, they probably won’t be playing anymore,” one Giants player relayed Shurmur’s message in a team meeting, via NJ.com.
While not calling anyone out by name, Jones has to be one of those Shurmur is speaking directly to. Sure he’s a rookie. Struggles are to be expected. That’s fine.
However, a team without much margin for error can’t afford its quarterback continuing to make the mistakes we’ve seen from the first-round pick.
He heads into Week 10 against the Jets having thrown 11 touchdowns compared to eight interceptions while fumbling the ball a whopping 10 times. That’s just not going to cut it.
New York has turned the ball over 22 times in nine games. It ranks in the bottom 10 in points scored and bottom four in points allowed.
Shurmur’s message for his players is rather clear. It also comes with him facing the pressure of being on the hot seat after less than two seasons as the team’s head coach.
The Giants are 7-18 under Shurmur. This comes after he posted a 9-23 record in two seasons as the Cleveland Browns’ head coach earlier in the decade.
