Report: GM candidates being advised to ‘steer clear of 49ers job’

The San Francisco 49ers are looking for a new general manager. But per Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, New England Patriots Director of player personnel Nick Caserio will not be that person.

Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports added that people are being advised against working for the 49ers.

This is certainly not a surprise. Since their three consecutive NFC Championship Game appearances from 2011-2013, the 49ers have been a model of dysfunction. The team suffered through a disappointing 8-8 season in 2014, which ultimately led to the dismissal of head coach Jim Harbaugh. The subsequent two years have brought a combined seven wins.

Additionally, Jim Tomsula and Chip Kelly each lasted only one year as the team’s head coach. Kelly also alleged that former general manager Trent Baalke “undermined him,” which you can read about here.

Baalke and Kelly are both gone. Still, it does speak to the overall dysfunction under team CEO and effective owner, Jed York.

What’s interesting is that while¬†Caserio won’t be headed to San Francisco, another New England employee might be. It had been previously reported that the 49ers were likely to hire ESPN analyst Louis Riddick as the GM, with Patriots’ offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels as the coach.
