Alex Smith thinks Chiefs will add a quarterback in the draft

There had been some speculation following the 2016 season that the Kansas City Chiefs would look to replace Alex Smith over the short term. The team was linked to both Jimmy Garoppolo and Tony Romo on the trade block, but nothing came from those rumors.

Now with Smith entrenched in as the starter for the upcoming season, Kansas City’s focus has turned to the long term. It’s in this that the veteran quarterback knows full well that his team will likely add another signal caller when the draft comes calling next week.

“This is the NFL, I’ve been playing long enough,” Smith said, via The Kansas City Star. “You pretty quickly realize we have three guys right now in the quarterback room, right? We’re a guy short. Someone’s coming in.”

As of right now, the Chiefs have Smith, Tyler Bray and Joel Stave under contract at quarterback. With Smith turning 33 later this month and neither of those two other signal callers acting as long-term options, it would stand to reason that Kansas City will add another option in the draft.

The only question here is whether the team will look to expedite its transition from Smith to a young quarterback under center. Smith earned his second Pro Bowl trip in four seasons with Kansas City this past year, putting up 3,502 passing yards with 15 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Though, there’s always been questions about his ability to lead a team deep into the playoffs. Following a 12-win regular season, Kansas City was knocked out in the divisional playoffs this past January. It represents the third time in Smith’s four seasons as the team’s starter that it has been eliminated before the conference championship round. The other season saw Kansas City miss the playoffs altogether.

Picking 27th overall, there’s a chance the Chiefs could nab a first-round talent at quarterback. If Mitch Trubisky, Deshaun Watson, DeShone Kizer or Pat Mahomes were to fall to that spot, Andy Reid and Co. would likely look in that direction. If not, we can probably expect the team to target either Davis Webb or Brady Kaaya on Day 2.
