49ers G’ Alex Boone Turned Down Significant Contract Extension

Apparently San Francisco 49ers guard Alex Boone wants to be paid like an elite player. The current holdout, who is out about $1 million since deciding not to report to camp, reportedly turned down an extension offer from the 49ers that would have made him one of the 12 highest-paid guards in the NFL.

Boone is set to make just $4 million over the course of the next two seasons. By taking on these fines and remaining away from the 49ers, the guard has made it clear where he stands. Give him a contract he believes he deserves or he will not report.

For their part, the 49ers have in the past declined to negotiate extensions with players who are holding out. We saw this with Frank Gore a couple years back and Vernon Davis earlier this summer.

Based on Brandt’s numbers, the 49ers extension offer would have paid Boone about $6 million annually. Those are higher figures than what Louis Vasquez (Denver Broncos) and Evan Mathis (Philadelphia Eagles) currently average.

There have been rumors out there that teams are interested in acquiring Boone in a trade prior to the start of the regular season. If this report is true, a trade seems more likely than an extension. San Francisco isn’t going to go higher than $6 million per season for the guard. You can take that to the bank.
