Kyle Shanahan ‘hoping’ Nick Bosa can play in Week 1

The San Francisco 49ers won’t have No. 2 overall pick Nick Bosa in any of their preseason games after he suffered a sprained ankle Wednesday in practice.

However, head coach Kyle Shanahan said he is “hoping” Bosa can play in Week 1 of the regular season.

Earlier on Thursday, 49ers general manager John Lynch gave an update that indicates Shanahan’s hope may be a bit optimistic.

On his readiness by Week 1: “A lot will be told today and in the coming weeks with how he’s responding. We want him right. We are going to do what’s in the best interest. We’ll see where that goes.”

Lynch also has said he doesn’t believe Bosa is injury prone.

“We don’t feel he is injury prone,” Lynch said, per the San Francisco Chronicle. “He had a core muscle deal in his last year in college. He took that year and decided to get healthy. Yesterday he had a large human being fall on his leg while he was engaged with someone else.

“So some of those you just can’t – that’s football. You can’t prevent that. We’re thrilled with what we have in Nick Bosa. We’re going to get him right and he’ll be a great player for a long time in this league.”

Regardless of what is being said publicly, the 49ers must be feeling a bit of consternation. Bosa also missed most of the team’s offseason program with a hamstring injury and is coming off a season-ending injury that required surgery last year at Ohio State.
