The St. Louis Cardinals are adding a veteran backstop to the mix behind future Hall of Famer Yadier Molina.

According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals are signing four-time All-Star catcher Matt Wieters to a minor league deal.

Most assumed the 32-year-old Wieters would attempt to latch on with a team that gives him an opportunity to start on a regular basis. Given that Molina has appeared in 120-plus games in each of the past four seasons, that’s not going to be the case in St. Louis.

A former top-five pick of the Baltimore Orioles back in 2007, Wieters has earned four All-Star appearances and two Gold Gloves during a solid 10-year career.

Unfortunately, he’s also seen regression at the plate in recent years. Last year with the Washington Nationals, Wieters hit just .238 with eight homers, 30 RBI and a .330 OBP.
