Bills announce the release of longtime TE Charles Clay

The Buffalo Bills are apparently going in another direction at tight end for young quarterback Josh Allen.

The team announced on Friday that it has released veteran tight end Charles Clay after four seasons in Western New York.

Clay, 30, originally signed a lucrative five-year, $38 million contract with Buffalo in 2015 after a near Pro Bowl performance the previous season with the Miami Dolphins.

Since then, he’s failed to live up to that relatively lofty price tag. Last season alone, Clay caught just 21 passes for 184 yards in 13 games (12 starts).

By moving on from Clay, the Bills save $4.5 million against the salary cap. They take on the same figure in terms of a dead money.

By virtue of this move, Buffalo finds itself north of $79 million under the cap — the third-highest figure in the NFL.
