The New York Mets are struggling to keep pace with their National League East rivals these days, but a monumental blunder Wednesday isn’t going to help with any of that.
In the first inning of their game against the road game against the Cincinnati Reds, the Mets batted out of order. The faux pas cost the team a runner in scoring position, adding insult to injury.
The lineup sheets we have list Bruce batting cleanup behind Cabrera, but evidently that is not the batting order.

The lineup card received by the umps had Cabrera batting second and Flores third. Mot Flores second and Cabrera third, so the Mets screwed up.

Needless to say, Mets fans and analysts had plenty to say about all this.
The Mets batted out of order, and as a result forfeited a man in scoring position in the first inning. I've never seen that before in a professional baseball game.

The #Mets just batted out of order, thwarting a potential first-inning rally, and … and I just don't know what to say about that.

I said last night Mickey Callaway tends to manage an odd game. I had no idea he'd up the ante on me. Very clever. #Mets

When I tweeted earlier that this was not a lineup you could have guessed for the #Mets in Game 35, I didn’t realize it would baffle Callaway and his coaches too.

The Mets found a way to mess up the "step right up" part of the song https://t.co/xFlpz4yatX

Admittedly, it usually takes much more of the season for the Mets to implode, so this is particularly impressive.

But there’s at least some good news…we hope. The Mets have nowhere to go but up for the rest of the game, right?
