Report: John Elway attending Cotton Bowl to watch Sam Darnold in person

Sam Darnold

After taking some time out of his schedule to watch Josh Allen perform in his final game for Wyoming, Denver Broncos general manager John Elway will be in Arlington, Texas, attending the Cotton Bowl Friday night so he can get an up-close and personal look at USC quarterback Sam Darnold.

Mike Klis of 9News in Denver reported Elway will be there with Matt Russell (director of player personnel) and Gary Kubiak, the former head coach who is now an adviser for the team.

Of course, Darnold is hardly the only person Elway and Co. will be there to see. The Ohio State Buckeyes have a ton of talent to show off, including cornerback Denzel Ward and offensive lineman Billy Price. There are also some hot players on the USC side not names Darnold, including running back Ronald Jones II and pass rusher Rasheem Green.

That said, there’s no doubt that Denver’s greatest need is a the quarterback position. The big question would be do the Broncos have the draft capital needed to move up enough to land Darnold?

Denver, with a record of 5-10, currently has the No. 6 spot heading into the final weekend of action. Darnold is seen by many as a top-5 lock, should he decide to come out. The Cleveland Browns (rumored to be interested in Josh Allen) could be targeting Darnold, not to mention the New York Giants at No. 2 overall.

So, if Denver really does love Darnold and wants him, it’s likely Elway would need to swing a deal to land him. It’s going to be fascinating to see how this all plays out.
