Former SMU and NFL head coach Ron Meyer passes away

In some sad news out of Dallas, former SMU, New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts head coach Ron Meyer has passed away at the age of 76.

Meyer’s former running back with the Mustangs, Pro Football Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson, was the first to announce the coach’s passing.

Meyer served as the head coach of the Southern Methodist Mustangs from 1976-81, overseeing one of the most-talented and troubled programs in the nation.

Meyer then moved on to coach the New England Patriots from 1982-84 and Indianapolis Colts (1986-1991). Meyer posted a 34-32-1 record in Dallas before putting up a 54-50 mark in the NFL. He also led the Colts to their first division title in 1987 since the organization moved from Baltimore four years earlier.

This news comes on the same day that SMU lost head football coach Chad Morris to the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Our thoughts go out to the entire Meyer family, the Mustangs program and both the Indianapolis Colts and New England Patriots during these most difficult of times.
