The Seattle Mariners have offered their take on the 2016 election — in a manner of speaking. The Mariners didn’t come out and endorse Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton. Instead, they called for Edgar Martinez to receive an electoral sweep into the Hall of Fame.

The good news for Martinez and the Mariners is he doesn’t need an electoral sweep. Martinez needs only 75 percent of the vote — or 404 electoral votes to find his way to Cooperstown.
We can safely rely on the Pacific Northwest. Washington, Oregon, and Idaho should come through in a big way.
Normally, we could also count on New York, where Martinez was born. But Martinez may not win the votes of many Yankees fans. Of course, Yankee haters are also everywhere, and they may be inclined to vote for Martinez.
That may be Martinez’s best campaign item throughout the country.
