In addition to his yearly trips to South America, Jim Harbaugh is expanding his influence to help those in need.
Per Susan Beck of The American Lawyer, the Michigan head coach will be joining a “Leaders Council” for the group The Legal Services Corp., which will “raise awareness of the need for increased funding for civil legal services for the poor.”
Microsoft is spearheading the project with a donation of $1 million, and the council will be announced at the White House.
“The first step to more funding is more awareness,” LSC president James Sandman told The American Lawyer. “If Jim Harbaugh would simply speak on the issue [of the legal aid crisis] it would be heard differently.”
No doubt many of the same folks who frown upon Harbaugh’s now-banned satellite camps will see this as another attempt by the head coach to gain a competitive advantage. But those folks would be missing the point, here. Harbaugh has long been involved in causes outside of football that help those in need.
Hopefully the council can make some solid headway creating opportunities for people who otherwise wouldn’t have them.
