Geno Smith practicing, might be active in Week 3

New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith is back to practicing in full for the first time since getting his jaw broken by former teammate IK Enemkpali in a locker room fight.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reported Smith might be available for the Jets in Week 3 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

This doesn’t mean if he’s indeed active Smith will be playing on Sunday, however. With the team off to a great start, per ESPN’s Rich Cimini, Bowles said Smith is Ryan Fitzpatrick’s backup no matter what.

“Ryan is the starting quarterback right now. I mean, we’re going good. We have good chemistry and everything else. Geno understands that.”

The Jets are off to a surprisingly wonderful 2-0 start, so it looks like Smith will be on clipboard duty while the veteran calls the signals. If the team continues to find success under Fitzpatrick, who has a clear connection with Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker, then Smith’s future with the Jets could be in jeopardy.

To date, Fitzpatrick has completed 63.8 percent of his passes for 423 yards, four touchdowns, two interceptions and of course two victories.

Like the old saying goes, if it isn’t broke, then don’t fix it.
