The Kansas City Chiefs got a much-needed boost to their secondary in Round 1 of the 2015 NFL draft when they selected Washington cornerback Marcus Peters with the 18th-overall pick. Peters was considered the most talented cornerback in this year’s class, but red flags about his personality rose questions of whether or not he’d be selected early in the draft.
Peters is an athletic and aggressive cornerback who is able to read a quarterback’s intentions and mirror teams’ best receivers. At 6’0″ and 197 pounds, he has the prototypical size for the position and the required speed to track down the NFL’s top wideouts.
However, Peters’ character concerns could again rear their ugly heads for the Chiefs. He was ejected from one game in 2014 and then ultimately dismissed from the Washington football program after repeated run-ins with the coaching staff. The Chiefs will have to get Peters’ hot-headedness under control without forcing him to sacrifice what makes him such a special player on the field.
In three seasons at Washington, Peters totaled 129 combined tackles, 9.5 tackles for a loss, one sack, 11 interceptions and 27 passes defensed. Though he appeared in only nine games in 2014, he still registered 30 combined tackles, four tackles for a loss, three interceptions and seven passes defensed. As long as Peters does not try to pull what he did in Washington with the Kansas City’s coaching staff, he has a lot of promise in the NFL.
