Cincinnati Reds 2B Brandon Phillips Has Torn Thumb Ligament

This is potentially a big blow for a Cincinnati Reds team that is currently in second place in the NL central and seven games over .500. Various reports suggest that three-time All-Star Brandon Phillips suffered a torn thumb ligament and will have surgery on Friday.

Phillips is hitting .272 with seven homers and 40 RBI’s on the season. He is coming off a year that saw him win the NL Gold Glove at second base and earn an All-Star appearance. Considering that Cincinnati ranks 22nd in MLB in runs scored and 19th in batting average, the likelihood of Phillips missing extended time could very well have a huge impact down the road.

Remember, Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper missed 57 games earlier this season with the same injury. There is a possibility that Phillips could be lost for the remainder of the year.
