MLB Has A March Madness Bracket Of Its Own

We all know March Madness is NCAA Basketball’s last hoorah before the best sport in the world, baseball, get’s started. Just kidding. Kind of.

But in any case, Bleacher Report decided to make a 64 player (as opposed to the 64-team bracket NCAA has). So naturally, the MLB geek in me got excited.

Bleacher Report broke it down into four Regions: Athletic, Slugger, Righty, and Southpaw Regions.

Naturally, the names for the Athletics Regions contained Jayson Werth, Yasiel Puig and Carlos Gonzalez.

No surprises here: Carlos Gonzalez was one of the names that kept the Colorado Rockies somewhat relevant in MLB last season. With a couple All-Star game appearances and Gold Gloves as well, Gonzalez last season had a .302 batting average, 26 bombs, and 118 hits.

2013 didn’t compare to his 2012 season when he hit a .336 batting average with 34 home runs, and was third in MVP voting behind  Joey Votto and Albert Pujols.

One of the Righty Region’s being talked about is Craig Kimbrel (duh). The 25-year-old righty from the Atlanta Braves has to be one of the scariest dudes to face in the batter’s box. He hasn’t had one season where he’s pitched below a .500 season, is always in talks when Cy Young awards come around, and has a Rookie of the Year award under his belt. Did I mention, he’s only 25?

Going over to the Slugger Region, another non-surprise is Chris Davis of the Baltimore Orioles. The slugger is in this region more than likely because his numbers were so colossal, people assumed PED’s.

Last season he hit with a .286 batting average. More importantly he lead the AL in home runs (53) and RBI’s (138), above Triple Crown Winner Miguel Cabrera, not bad Davis, not bad at all.

Finally, one of the names being mentioned in the Southpaw Region of the MLB Bracket is Gio Gonzalez of the Washington Nationals. His 2012 season stands out more than last year’s, but he still made a mark with the Nationals. (This is coming from the team that has Stephen Strasburg after all).

The 28-year-old concluded the 2013 season with a 3.36 ERA, 192 strikeouts, and 1.252 WHIP.

There are no shockers when naming No. 1 seeds for this non-existent tournament. Listed are Clayton Kershaw, Max Scherzer,  Miguel Cabera, and Mike Trout. You know them as the guys you snagged in the first round of your fantasy baseball drafts.

Don’t worry, the March Madness that is college basketball will never be replaced, but you have to admit, everyone loves a sports bracket.
