Buffalo Bills running back LeSean McCoy is feeling a bit overlooked these days. With the likes of Ezekiel Elliott, Le’Veon Bell and David Johnson being considered the best this position has to offer in the NFL, McCoy isn’t a happy camper.
“I think I’m the best back in the league,” McCoy told Bleacher Report’s Tyler Dunne.
McCoy is coming off a 2016 season with the Bills that saw him put up 1,267 rushing yards to go with 50 receptions and a total of 14 touchdowns. Those statistics in no way compare to what the other three aforementioned running backs did last season.
Despite this, McCoy seems upset that those three are mentioned among the game’s best and he is not.
“Isn’t that crazy? That’s crazy, yo. I don’t like that,” McCoy said.
Johnson gained an NFL-high 2,118 total yards while leading NFL running backs with 20 touchdowns for the Arizona Cardinals last season. In just 12 games, Bell put up 1,884 total yards and nine touchdowns for Pittsburgh. And in what ended up being an All Pro performance as a rookie, Elliott gained nearly 2,000 total yards with 16 touchdowns.
It goes without saying that McCoy is an elite talent. But he doesn’t compare favorably to those three running backs in any way. This doesn’t mean the 29-year-old back lacks confidence.
“There’s nothing that I can’t do,” he told Dunne. “I can catch the ball. I run routes. I’m a mismatch for defenses. I run the ball inside and run the ball outside. One man can’t tackle me. I find a way to get it done.”
Good for McCoy. He’ll definitely have to turn it up a notch if the Bills are to make the playoffs for the first time since 1999. Should that happen, maybe he will start being mentioned among NFL’s best backs. Until then, he will always have that confidence.
