Mariners’ Drew Smyly to undergo Tommy John Surgery

The Seattle Mariners announced on Wednesday that lefty Drew Smyly will have Tommy John Surgery and will be out 12-15 months.

With this news, it’s entirely possible that Smyly will never throw a pitch for the Mariners. He was acquired by Seattle from the Tampa Bay Rays in the offseason but has been out for the entire season. He’ll obviously miss the remainder of 2017, and the regular recovery time would likely have Smyly returning to action at or near the end of the 2018 season.

It’s also difficult to tell what this means for Smyly going forward. The 2018 season is his final arbitration year. In 2019, he’ll be an unrestricted free agent.

The 2016 season was one of the worst of Smyly’s career. He posted a career worst 4.88 ERA and a 1.272 WHIP, the second worst total of his career. But in his time with the Detroit Tigers and Tampa Bay Rays, Smyly has generally been an effective pitcher.

He has a career 3.74 ERA, 1.199 WHIP, and an 8.7 strikeout per nine innings ratio.
