Cal Berkley’s Robert Paylor paralyzed below the chest in National Championship Rugby Match

Robert Paylor

Robert Paylor is a student-athlete from the University of California, Berkley who is now paralyzed below his chest following an injury suffered during the Collegiate National Championship Rugby Match on Saturday.

His family has set up a GoFundMe account and is trying to raise $1 million to help pay for what will be a difficult, expensive recovery.

“According to the Dana and Christopher Reeve Foundation, the average expense for the first year with high tetraplegia can be about 1 million dollars and with low tetraplegia, about $769,000,” the family wrote on the GoFundMe page. “This was stated in 2016, and we know how much medical expenses went up last year.

“Robert’s road ahead is long, and very expensive. Supporting Robert with whatever you can give and help relieve the financial burden would be greatly appreciated. With financial assistance, Robert and his family can focus on his rehab and getting healthy and strong.”

Incredibly, in just one day already more than $133,000 has been raised at the time of this article’s publication. Yet it’s still far short of their ultimate goal.

Cal ended up beating Arkansas State for the title, but afterwards head coach Jack Clark made it clear the victory was bittersweet.

“I’m proud of our boys. They’ve shown significant improvement over the course of the campaign. Our excitement is tempered by Rob being in hospital. Our prayers are with him and his family,” he said, per californiagoldenblogs.com.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Paylor and his family as well during this difficult time.
