Report: Rockets ‘expressed interest’ in trading with Cavaliers for Iman Shumpert

Iman Shumpert

The Houston Rockets are looking at every possible way to improve their roster before the NBA trade deadline. This includes possibly landing Iman Shumpert in a trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers, per ESPN’s Marc Stein.

This isn’t all that surprising. After all, Houston has been trying to upgrade its roster for a few weeks and was one of the teams interested in acquiring Serge Ibaka before he was traded to the Toronto Raptors.

Shumpert has been a solid player for Cleveland this year and is averaging 7.8 points, 1.5 assists, 2.9 rebounds and one steal per game. He is one of the primary bench players for the Cavs, averaging more than 25 points per game.

With that in mind, and given Cleveland’s own attempts to upgrade its roster, it seems like the Rockets would have to give up something significant to land Shumpert. Then again, given Houston’s depth at point guard, perhaps a player-for-player swap could be arranged.

Houston has been one of the best teams in the west this season but likely knows it is still a tier below the Golden State Warriors and San Antonio Spurs. Because of this, we do expect the Rockets to make some sort of move to improve its roster before the February 23rd trade deadline comes and goes.
