Report: Browns interview Jeff Garcia for quarterbacks coach position

Former Pro Bowl quarterback Jeff Garcia has been looking to make a profession out of this whole coaching thing for some time now.

After stepping away from the game in 2011, Garcia headed north to be the Montreal Alouettes quarterbacks coach in 2014. He then caught on as an offensive assistant for the St. Louis Rams in their final season before moving to Los Angeles.

Needless to say, there’s drive on Garcia’s part to prove he can be a valuable coach in the NFL. That was only magnified recently when the four-time Pro Bowler opined that he could do a good job as the San Francisco 49ers’ head coach (more on that here).

While Garcia himself is years away from possibly being a head coach, the Cleveland Browns are reportedly giving him an opportunity to prove that he could be a good quarterbacks coach for the team.

Garcia did play for the Browns in 2004, but he has no real ties to anyone within the organization today. It would also likely represent the most-daunting task an inexperienced coach could take on.

We already know how bad the Browns’ quarterback situation has been over the past two decades. This past regular season alone, Cleveland started three quarterbacks with five different players at that position taking snaps under center. It resulted in the team winning one game with its quarterbacks combining to throw 15 touchdowns compared to 14 interceptions.

One would think that Hue Jackson and Co. might want a more experienced assistant at the quarterbacks coach position. Then again, Jackson himself is a former position coach and works closely with the quarterbacks.
