Report: Hawks and Pelicans talked Dwight Howard trade

Dwight Howard

Despite sitting as the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference, it appears that the Atlanta Hawks are looking to change up their roster big time. The team traded Kyle Korver to the conference-rival Cleveland Cavaliers earlier this month and has been rumored to be interested in trading All-Star big man Paul Millsap.

Now comes this rather interesting report from ESPN’s Zach Lowe indicating that the Hawks have talked to the New Orleans Pelicans about the possibility of moving Dwight Howard.

The talks were exploratory in nature and didn’t progress past the initial stage. Nonetheless, it’s still interesting.

Atlanta signed the Georgia native to a three-year, $70.5 million contract this past summer. Howard was brought on to replace Al Horford, who had previously signed with the Boston Celtics.

It seemed to be a perfect match. And Howard himself has performed well this season, averaging 13.9 points and 13.3 rebounds per game. Why the Hawks would look to shake up the core of a team that’s seemingly in contention back east remains to be seen.

As it relates to the Pelicans, this trade scenario seems to make more sense. The team has struggled building anything of substance around all-world big man Anthony Davis. It sits at 16-26 on the season and is nowhere near a contender out west. Teaming Davis up with Howard would form one of the top big men tandems in the NBA.

It will be interesting to see if these talks pick up once again prior to the trade deadline next month.
