If the Chicago Cubs want to lock up Jake Arrieta before he becomes a free agent following the 2018 season, they’d better act fast.

Speaking to Jesse Rogers of ESPN 1000, Arrieta’s agent, Scott Boras, said that he anticipated extension talks will take place will take place in January.

Arrieta figures to cash in in a big way. Quite frankly, he’s been one of baseball’s best pitchers since joining the Cubs.

Since coming to Chicago in 2013, Arrieta has gone 54-21 with a 2.52 ERA, 0.985 WHIP, 2.90 WHIP and an 8.9 K/9 mark. He also won the 2015 National League Cy Young Award and was an integral part of the Cubs’ first World Series win since 1908.
