Shane Vereen out for the season after triceps injury

After totaling 95 yards and a touchdown in a loss Sunday for the New York Giants, running back Shane Vereen’s season is over.

The Giants announced Monday morning that Vereen will miss the rest of the season with a triceps injury that requires surgery.

This injury will significantly impact the Giants. Vereen emerged as the a key running back in New York’s offense this year, and there aren’t many options behind him going forward.

Rashad Jennings will be the featured back going forward. He sat out Sunday’s game against Washington because of a thumb injury. Along with Jennings, third-year back Orleans Darkwa will likely split carries.

Without Vereen, New York’s offense will become even more dependent on Eli Manning and the passing game. It’s a formidable attack, with Odell Beckham Jr., Sterling Shepard and Victor Cruz. But one-dimensional offenses hardly ever work out in the long run.
