49ers place WR Bruce Ellington on season-ending injured reserve

It is starting to look like playing professional football might not be in the cards for San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Bruce Ellington.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport broke the news on Tuesday that the 49ers placed Ellington on season-ending injured reserve with a torn hamstring.

This is an unfortunate setback for a team that was planning on featuring Ellington in a starting role in the slot.

The former South Carolina standout had been on the mend from a hamstring pull and was expected to have a huge season in San Francisco.

In a telling turn of events, the 49ers traded away guard Brandon Thomas to the Detroit Lions in exchange for veteran Jeremy Kerley on Monday.

The former New York Jets receiver is expected to replace Ellington both in the slot and as the team’s starting return man.

The loss of Ellington is just one of the many fires San Francisco is currently attempting to put out prior to the start of the regular season.
