Cam Newton: Steph Curry is special

Stephen Currry

Stephen Curry is an unabashed supporter of the Carolina Panthers, and their quarterback — Cam Newton — returned the favor with some kinds words for the Golden State Warriors point guard.

Chuck Barney of the San Jose Mercury News notes Newton’s praise of Curry:

“Steph Curry is special. He does things you only see on a video game. … He transcends the game. He’s not only giving opportunities to shooters, but to undersized guys. You’ve got to respect that.”

So far, Newton and Curry — whose father played 10 years for the Charlotte Hornets — have experienced similar seasons.

Not only are the Panthers and Warriors the favorite to win their respective league championship, both players have improved from great to elite. Newton took that step as a passer, and Curry is an unstoppable offensive force with unlimited shooting range.

Considering his skill set, Curry has no equal on the court. He also leads the league with 29.4 points per game. Only Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson can match the level of excellence Newton brings to the field as a dual-threat guy. Newton accounted for an NFL-best 45 touchdowns.

And they’re both great at celebrating, too.

One thing is for sure: We’re living in a tremendous sports era with Curry and Newton as primary entertainers.

Curry will be watching Newton on Sunday night when he battles the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50, and the reigning NBA MVP will definitely have something to say if Newton brings a championship back to Charlotte.
