In the latest sign that the San Diego Chargers are prepared to join the Rams in Los Angeles, the team reportedly applied to trademark multiple names in relation to the city that resides a bit further north in California.
According to Nathan Fenno of the Los Angeles Times, the Chargers applied to trademark “L.A.” and “Los Angeles” two days after the league-wide vote last week to approve the then St. Louis Rams relocation to Los Angeles.
That vote also gave the Chargers the right to join the Rams in their new Inglewood venue in 2019. Equally as important, the Chargers have the option to move to Los Angeles as early as the 2016 season.
We had reported over the weekend that the Chargers were likely to announce their relocation to Los Angeles at some point this week.
This latest information only adds to the likelihood of that happening.
Fenno went on to suggest that formal negotiations between the Chargers and Rams pertaining to how a partnership in Inglewood would work kicked off on Monday. There shouldn’t be many issues on that end — an indication an announcement could be coming in the matter of days.
If the Chargers were to move to Los Angeles, the Oakland Raiders might see San Diego as an attractive option. They were the team left out in the cold following the vote last week.
They have not signed a one-year lease agreement with the Oakland Coliseum and don’t currently have a viable stadium plan in their current market.
