Mike Evans says hamstring is 100 percent, hopes to play Sunday

Mike Evans

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were without star receiver Mike Evans during the season opener, but the second-year target believes he’s 100 percent for Week 2.

Per Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times, Evans said he’s completely healed from the hamstring injury that kept him sidelined during the Bucs’ 42-14 loss to the Tennessee Titans.

Evans’ statement likely raised a few eyebrows. If he’s truly “100 percent,” why wouldn’t Tampa Bay let him play?

Perhaps he’s waiting for official clearance from the medical staff because hamstring injuries tend to linger throughout the year, especially if a player rushes back. In that case, the Buccaneers might decide to hold Evans out for another week or two.

Nevertheless, rookie quarterback Jameis Winston certainly must be excited for Evans’ return. Last season, the Texas A&M product racked up 1,051 yards and 12 touchdowns despite mediocre play under center.

Winston managed to complete just 16-of-33 passes for 210 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions during his NFL debut. Austin Seferian-Jenkins and Vincent Jackson were his Winston’s top receivers, but the Bucs sorely lacked a third option.

Once Evans is officially ready, he’ll step in as the No. 1 wideout. Hopefully for all parties involved, Evans’ opportunity to prove he’s 100 percent healthy comes this weekend against the New Orleans Saints.
