Amid the aftermath of the Roger Goodell’s decision to uphold Tom Brady’s four-game ban in the Deflategate saga, the NFL thought it wise to seek protection for the man who made judgement against New England’s golden boy.
According to David Hench of the Portland Press Herald, the league “reached out” to the Scarborough Police for assistance with ensuring the commissioner and his home would not be harmed:
“They did reach out and let us know about the decision and that it might not be popular,” said Scarborough Police Chief Robbie Moulton. “We’re aware of the situation and will be patrolling the area certainly.”
According to the report, Goodell is thought to own a home in Scarborough worth $6.5 million, and this isn’t the first time the league has requested, and received, this kind of assistance.
Goodell is certainly unpopular these days with many NFL fans. An SI.com fan poll last year, after the Ray Rice incident, among other off-field disasters last summer, showed that only 28.5 percent of fans polled thought the commissioner should keep his job.
The man isn’t beloved.
However, there’s a growing sentiment, in light of the phone-destroying farce, that Goodell may be in the right when it comes to Brady and Deflategate.
Hopefully, he won’t need the police protection this time around.
