The NFL has suspended Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Marcell Dareus for the first game of the 2015 season for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.
Dareus, 25, is considered one of the top defensive linemen in the league. He recorded 49 tackles and 10 sacks during an All-Pro 2014 campaign. The former top-five pick also earned Pro Bowl honors in 2013.
Responding to his suspension, Dareus had this to say:
“Last year, I made a mistake involving possession of a banned substance. The NFL’s discipline for this conduct is part of the drug policy, and I apologize to my family, my teammates, the entire Bills organization and Bills fans that I will miss one game as a result of my mistake. I will work intensely that week and will be extremely happy to contribute to a win in Week 2 for the Bills.”
Buffalo will take on the defending AFC South champion Indianapolis Colts in Week 1. Considering Andrew Luck’s presence at quarterback in Indy, this is going to be a major blow for Rex Ryan and the Bills.
Dareus will be back to take on the New England Patriots and whoever is under center for the team’s second game the following week.
