It will go down as “what could have been” had the Seattle Seahawks decided to go with a running play instead of a passing play on their last offensive play of Super Bowl XLIX.
We all know that if Seattle Seahawks’ running back Marshawn Lynch been handed off the ball, he had an excellent chance of making the one yard Seattle needed to win the game.
The New England Patriots more than anyone are well aware of this fact. During an interview with the NFL Network Monday morning, running back Shane Vereen was asked if he thought the Patriots would have lost had Marshawn Lynch had a chance to carry the ball.
I think it’s a different game, I think it’s a different ending. When I was on the sideline, and I saw where they had the ball in the situation, we were trying to get some plays together for the offense to try and get at least a field goal to tie the thing up. So my focus was mainly more on that, ’cause I definitely thought they were going to hand it to him and he was gonna punch it in.
Obviously, that did not happen and the Patriots’ wildest dreams came true. Instead, Seattle ran a slant with Ricardo Lockette, which was picked off by Malcolm Butler.
While Pete Carroll lives with the fact that the play call produced the worst result ever and Darrell Bevell tries to shift the blame to the wide receiver, New England knew it benefited from the horrendous decision by Seattle.
