A’s Opening Day starter Kendall Graveman to undergo Tommy John Surgery

Kendall Graveman, who was the Oakland Athletics starting pitcher on Opening Day of the 2018 season, will undergo Tommy John Surgery.

Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reported the news, noting that Graveman is expected to miss 12-14 months.

“It’s been kind of tough,” Graveman said, per Slusser. “But in the long run, it’s going to work out. I’m going to work as hard as I can to get back.”

Graveman made only seven starts for Oakland in 2018. In those starts, he posted a 7.60 ERA, a 1.66 WHIP, and struck out 27 hitters in 34.1 innings. In his career, Graveman has a 4.38 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, and a 5.8 K/9 rate.

While the A’s are having a strong season, the pitching rotation has been plagued with injuries. Jharel Cotton and A.J. Puk were each expected to play a role in the Oakland rotation in 2018. But each underwent Tommy John Surgery prior to the season beginning.

Graveman will likely miss all of 2019, as well. Though, if all goes well, it is possible that he could be back for September and the postseason, should the A’s qualify.
