Texans’ GM Rick Smith to take extended leave of absense

Day 2 2017 NFL Draft, Rick Smith

All of the focus surrounding the Houston Texans to close out the 2017 season has been on the field. There’s some uncertainty as it relates to head coach Bill O’Brien and general manager Rick Smith.

But in a reminder that life is about much more than football, Smith himself is apparently taking an extended leave of absence from the team. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter the leave will be to attend to Smith’s wife, Tiffany, who was just diagnosed with breast cancer.

“Texans’ GM Rick Smith is taking an extended leave of absence to take care of his wife, Tiffany, who recently was diagnosed with breast cancer, per a team source,” Schefter reported.

Obviously, this is about much more than football. Sure there’s going to be some issues arise when it comes to O’Brien’s future in Houston and who he will now talk with as it relates to said future.

But that’s not the focus here. Instead, it’s all about someone within the organization being dealt a horrible hand and having to handle the unexpected that life brings.

Our thoughts are with the Smiths as they prepare for the battle of their lives.
