Report: Mets, Pirates discussing Starling Marte trade

The New York Mets and Pittsburgh Pirates have reportedly begun to discuss a trade that would send All-Star outfielder Starling Marte to New York.

The discussions, first reported by MLB Network’s Jon Heyman, have involved both sides discussing potential names that could be part of the deal. However, Heyman notes that it’s unclear how far along the organizations are in talks.

New York’s interest in Marte ties back to November, when the possibility of a deal first popped up. Even after acquiring Jake Marisnick, the Mets are still exploring potential moves to upgrade in center field.

Marte posted a .295/.342/.503 slash line with 23 home runs, 25 stolen bases and 97 runs scored last season for the Pirates. While his defensive abilities have declined with age, the 31-year-old would be an upgrade for New York in center field.

An All-Star in 2016 and two-time Gold Glove Award recipient, Marte is under contract for $11.5 million. He also has a $12.5 million team option for 2021, which carries a $2 million buyout.

Pittsburgh’s general manager Ben Cherington, who took over the role in November, is also reportedly open to dealing All-Star first baseman Josh Bell as the team prepares for a rebuild.
