Report: Cam Newton underwent surgery for Lisfranc injury, hopes to be healthy by spring

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton underwent surgery on his Lisfranc injury on Monday in New York, per Joe Person of The Athletic.

Person also shared that “The hope is Newton will be healthy by the spring,” noting Newton “sought multiple opinions” before opting for surgery with Brooklyn Nets doctor Martin O’Malley, who did the Achilles surgery for Kevin Durant.

Newton injured his foot during his one and only appearance this past summer during the team’s third preseason game. He tried to play through the injury but lasted just two games before admitting in a YouTube vlog that he really couldn’t push off of his foot and that he probably shouldn’t have played.

At the time of Newton’s admission that he did, in fact have the Lisfranc injury and that it would take time to heal, the estimate he gave was that it could take up to six weeks. The injury never did heal the way he hoped, however, which is why he ultimately opted to have his foot surgically repaired.

The Panthers have stated that Newton’s status within the organization won’t be determined until he’s fully healthy. However, there are plenty of reports indicating the team would likely prefer to trade the star quarterback, rather than have him back under center in 2020.
