Kansas City Chiefs could be without major offensive weapon in Week 1 due to surgery

Before the Kansas City Chiefs landed former first-round pick Kadarius Toney in a trade last season, the talented wide receiver had developed a reputation as being injury prone, and that trend is continuing into the 2023 season.

Heading into last season, there were many doubts about the Kansas City Chiefs offenses’ ability to be a dominant force without superstar wide receiver Tyreek Hill. Yet as the weeks passed quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce proved that there was still more than enough talent there to be able to make noise on the offensive side of the ball without the speedster.

Nevertheless, before the 2022 trade deadline, the organization swung a surprise trade for New York Giants wide receiver Kadarius Toney to bolster the receiver corps. It was a stunning move considering New York had used their top pick in the 2021 NFL Draft on the star from Florida. However, after missing most of his rookie season and playing limited snaps last year he became expendable.

What was the Giants’ loss was set to be the Chiefs’ gain as he was a solid contributor last season and was set to take on an even more notable role in his first full year with the team. Unfortunately for Kansas City, Toney’s injury bug will again sideline him for at least the next few weeks.

On Tuesday, it was revealed by head coach Andy Reid that the 24-year-old underwent surgery to clean up cartilage for a preexisting knee injury. The recent issue came after he tweaked the same knee he actually had a procedure on this offseason, which certainly is not a good sign for the joint long-term.

The Kansas City Chiefs head coach claimed “there’s a chance” the receiver who was expected to be a starter this season could be ready for their Week 1 game on Sept. 7 against the Detroit Lions. However, considering his injury history and this now being a second surgery in a matter of months, they are more likely to be very cautious with the oft-injured pass catcher.
