Hue Jackson on sitting Baker Mayfield: ‘He’ll thank me for it one day’

Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson has noted on multiple occasions that rookie No. 1 pick and reigning Heisman winner Baker Mayfield won’t see regular season action as the team’s No. 1 quarterback. Instead, that role will be filled by former Pro Bowler Tyrod Taylor.

In many ways, it makes perfect sense. Jackson screwed the proverbial pooch by throwing then-rookie DeShone Kizer to the wolves last season. It was an utter disaster for both the quarterback and his team.

In taking a different approach with Mayfield, Jackson notes that while the young quarterback won’t like sitting his rookie season, “he’ll thank me for it one day.”

Jackson might not be wrong here. Mayfield has impressed during the preseason, but he’s still a rookie and pretty darn raw. Whether Jackson is the head coach when Mayfield thanks him for riding the pine as a rookie remains to be seen.

Once again, Jackson himself is in the news for all the wrong reasons. He’s received a ton of push back for bringing an injured Tyrod Taylor back into last Thursday’s preseason game.

At 1-31 in two seasons as the Browns’ head coach, early struggles this year could very well lead to Jackson being replaced as head coach by offensive coordinator Todd Haley.
