WATCH: Helmet flies off as Tua Tagovailoa takes brutal hit, carted off field with hip injury

Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was carted off the field Saturday after taking a big hit that caused his helmet to fly off.

Tagovailoa was supposed to be done for the day, with Alabama up 35-7 over Mississippi State. But his coaches decided to let him play “for practice” and it backfired.

Late in the second quarter, Tagovailoa was taken down by two defenders as he threw the ball away. His helmet popped off, and he remained on the ground afterward.

Alabama medical staff came out onto the field to attend Tagovailoa after the big hit.

After being looked at on the field, Tagovailoa was taken back into the locker room on a cart.

Tagovailoa has been dealing with a high-ankle sprain, and it appeared he was unable to put pressure on his foot. However, a sideline reporter on ESPN reported that it was a right hip injury that caused Tagovailoa to be carted off the field.

One wonders if he’ll be back at any point this season, or if this was the last image we’ll have of his college football career.
