Roughnecks stay unbeaten by routing Renegades

Brandon Silvers threw for 173 yards and two touchdowns as the host Houston Roughnecks improved to 2-0 this season by knocking off the Arlington Renegades 23-14 on Sunday.

Silvers hit wide receiver Cedric Byrd with a 15-yard touchdown about midway through the third quarter to extend Houston’s lead to 21-14, and running back Max Borghi added a 4-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter.

Running back Nick Holley also caught a touchdown pass, and Ben Putman had four receptions for 65 yards.

Drew Plitt also threw two touchdown passes, both in the second quarter for the Renegades (1-1). He completed 15 of 30 passes for 120 yards.

Plitt and wide receiver LuJuan Winningham hooked up for an 11-yard score with just over nine minutes left in the second quarter, and tight end Nate Becker caught a 13-yard touchdown about four minutes before halftime.

The Roughnecks finished with five sacks to just one for the Renegades.

Brahmas 30, Guardians 12

Jack Coan threw for 165 yards and three touchdowns and San Antonio got its first win of the season by beating host Orlando.

San Antonio (1-1) broke away from a 6-6 tie after the first quarter to take the lead on Coan’s second passing score of the day, a 19-yard play to tight end Alize Mack. The Brahmas added the 1-point conversion on a Coan to wide receiver TJ Vasher completion with about one minute left before halftime.

The Brahmas blew the game open with a 14-point third quarter. The first score came on Coan’s 24-yard pass play to wide receiver Jalen Tolliver and a 1-point conversion pass to tight end Deon Yelder. Then Jon Hilliman ran 1 yard for a score and also rushed for the 1-point conversion.

Paxton Lynch completed 9 of 19 passes for 79 yards and one touchdown for the Guardians (0-2), while teammate Deondre Francis went 6 of 13 for 8 yards with one score and one interception. Wide receiver Javonta Payton had three catches for 47 yards for Orlando.

Mack and wide receiver Darece Robertson Jr. each made four catches for San Antonio.
