Report: Former first-round pick Shane Ray will have another surgery on wrist

Denver Broncos linebacker Shane Ray missed half of the 2017 season with a wrist injury that required surgery, and now he’ll be facing a second surgery after complications recently.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that, following more tests and a second opinion, a second surgery was deemed necessary and that this will keep him off the field for the rest of the spring, at least.

Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic provided a bit more detail on this.

This news comes one day after a second surgery was reported as on the table by Mike Klis of 9News in Denver. Ray has been held out of practices recently, due to swelling and pain in his wrist.

Last season was supposed to be Ray’s coming out party following the retirement of DeMarcus Ware. Originally the 23rd overall pick of the 2015 NFL Draft out of Missouri, he showed promise in 2016, logging eight sacks as a rotational pass rusher.

Unfortunately, the injury really hampered his ability to make an impact, even when he did play. He finished last season with just one sack and 16 tackles.
