L’Jarius Sneed suggests Kansas City Chiefs can’t afford to re-sign him and Chris Jones in 2024 free agency

While the hope is that the Kansas City Chiefs can re-sign both L’Jarius Sneed and Chris Jones this offseason, the rising star cornerback has his doubts the team has the money to afford them both.

The Chiefs organization is still celebrating another Lombardi trophy being added to their trophy case this year. With their win over the San Francisco 49ers, they became the first team in two decades to win consecutive Super Bowls and also solidified their place as the sports world’s current dynasty team since it was their third championship in five years.

However, winning a third straight title will get very hard very soon. This year’s Kansas City team was led by one of the best defenses in the league. Unfortunately for the Chiefs, their top two players on the unit — Chris Jones and L’Jarius Sneed — are set to become free agents. And both are looking for huge paydays.

During negotiations last year, reports stated the star pass rusher wanted to make similar money as the other top defensive players in the league, and after another Pro Bowl season and title that stance is unchanged. However, after a breakout season in 2023-24 where he became one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL, Sneed is looking to get paid like one this year.

During a Thursday appearance on the “Up and Adams” podcast Sneed sent a clear message to Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach. “Pay me. That’s all I’ve got to say, Pay me,” said Sneed.

When asked about the possibility of the team re-signing both star players, the 27-year-old was hopeful but didn’t seem overly confident.

“I hope so. They can’t keep both of us,” Sneed said. “Hopefully, they got enough for both of us. But you know, they gonna make it happen. I hope so.”

The organization will have the opportunity to use the franchise tag on one of them, but will still need to give a huge contract to the other. It will be interesting to see what salary cap massaging Veach can do to retain two key players on their roster for 2024.
