New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz took to the bump in the ninth inning against the Chicago Cubs Sunday night. But he did not throw a single pitch.

Umpires on hand inside Wrigley Field performed a foreign substance check on Diaz before he threw a pitch. The All-Star closer was ultimately ejected from the game.

It was a complete scene in Chicago.

The 2024 season has been frustrating for Diaz. This comes after he missed the entire 2023 campaign due to injury.

As for what happens next, Diaz is now the subject to a mandatory 10-game suspension.

Despite this, he said he’s not going to change things up moving forward.

At the very least, New York was able to come out on top by the score of 5-2. This represented the Mets ninth win in their past 11 games.
