NFLPA investigating agent David Canter for allegedly offering bribes to GMs to draft his clients

The NFL Players Association is reportedly investigating agent David Canter for contacting multiple teams and offering them bribes to pick his clients during the 2023 NFL Draft.

As first reported by ESPN’s Brooke Pryor, the NFLPA is looking into allegations that Canter offered general managers the use of his vacation properties if their team drafted one of his clients during the NFL Draft in April.

Canter, a renowned agent and the president of football for GSE Worldwide, has worked in the industry for decades. Among his clients in the NFL are Miami Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard, Los Angeles Chargers cornerback Asante Samuel Jr., and Dallas Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence.

One anonymous NFL general manager told Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio that he received an offer during the 223 NFL Draft and he’s aware of two other general managers who were also offered the incentive to draft one of Canter’s clients.

In a statement to ESPN, Canter denied the allegations with his agent stating they believe the matter will be resolved shortly.

“We are aware that the NFLPA is looking into communications between my client and various management personnel of certain NFL teams. Mr. Canter did not engage in any wrongdoing and he is fully cooperating with the NFLPA. We expect the situation to be resolved shortly.”

Canter’s clients in the 2023 NFL Draft included Green Bay Packers wide receiver Jayden Reed, a second-round pick, along with Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Desjuan Johnson. Los Angeles selected Johnson with the last pick, also known as Mr. Irrelevant.

According to ESPN, Canter already has a history of discipline from the NFLPA including multiple incidents in recent history.

Under existing rules, the NFLPA doesn’t directly state that agents aren’t allowed to offer teams an incentive to draft one of their players. However, per ESPN, the union’s inquiry wants to examine the allegations to see if Canter’s actions violated articles of the NFLPA’s Regulations for Contract Advisors.

Canter’s disciplinary record is expected to be factored into the investigation and potential punishment, with the revocation of his certification as an agent possible.
