Chicago Bears QB Justin Fields now favored to land with AFC contender in blockbuster trade

Rumors continue to persist that the Chicago Bears will trade quarterback Justin Fields at some point during the NFL Scouting Combine later this month.

Fields, 24, is coming off his third consecutive uneven season since Chicago made him the No. 11 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. The Bears are expected to use the top pick in this year’s draft on former USC Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams, making Fields expendable in the grand scheme of things.

Whether Fields will have a market as a potential starter on the trade block remains to be seen. He’s accounted for a mere 40 touchdown passes in 38 career starts with Chicago boasting a 10-28 record during that span.

Even then, Field’s dual-threat ability (2,220 rushing yards, 14 TD) and high-upside ability makes him an intriguing option on the trade market.

According to DraftKings SportsBook, Pittsburgh (-125) is now the betting favorite to land Fields in a trade this offseason. The Bears are second in odds to retain Fields at +200. Other teams are clearly in the mix, too.

  • Pittsburgh Steelers -125
  • Chicago Bears: +200
  • Atlanta Falcons: +600
  • New England Patriots: +650
  • Denver Broncos: +1200

Pittsburgh makes a lot of sense in that the team released veteran Mitchell Trubisky to open the offseason. The only quarterback currently on its roster is Kenny Pickett. He’s struggled to the tune of 13 touchdown passes in 24 career starts since the Steelers made him a first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

A report over the weekend also indicated that Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is high on Fields.

The Falcons and Patriots have also been linked to Fields on the rumor front in recent weeks. Both are said to be looking for veteran upgrades over youngsters Desmond Ridder and Mac Jones, respectively.

At this point, the growing thought process is that Chicago will be able to net a second-round pick and change for Fields in a trade. The Ohio State product did improve to an extent this past season with 20 total touchdowns and nine interceptions.

In addition to its first-round pick (20th overall), Pittsburgh boasts the 51st overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft. That could be used as part of a package to obtain Justin Fields. Enigmatic wide receiver George Pickens could also be part of said package.
