San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is not going to be throwing any time soon after undergoing surgery on his right elbow back in March.
It’s not yet known when Purdy will be back on the practice field. He could be ready for training camp. There is also a chance that the former seventh-round pick misses some regular-season action.
With that said, Purdy will be with the 49ers when they begin their offseason program in Santa Clara on Monday.
“Just being back around the guys, continue my rehab and get after the playbook. So it will be simple in that regard,” Purdy said Friday, via The Athletic.
This could be seen as good news in Purdy’s rehab after he suffered the aforementioned elbow injury in San Francisco’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game. At the very least, it’s good news for his development.

Purdy, 23, took over for an injured Jimmy Garoppolo in December. He put up an historic start to his career as Mr. Irrelevant from last year’s draft led the 49ers to a 5-0 regular-season record. He also aided in wins over the Seattle Seahawks and Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Playoffs before being injured early in the championship game.

Former No. 2 overall pick Trey Lance will likely take first-team reps over free-agent signing Sam Darnold once the off-season program opens next week. Lance suffered an ankle injury two games into his sophomore season and needs to prove himself to the 49ers’ brass once again.
“Trey Lance, this might be what it took to get him into a position where they are force-fed back into the idea. I’m just telling you man, I don’t know what’s going on with Trey Lance in that organization. I can just tell you that the confidence level between Brock Purdy and Trey Lance prior to this game, it was night and day and that is not good for Trey Lance.”

This isn’t necessarily impacting the relationship between Purdy and Lance. The former indicated that the two have been in touch throughout the offseason. “We obviously want what’s best for each other,” Purdy said.
As for Purdy’s recovery from surgery, he’s making it clear that everything is going goo. Though, his presence at the start of the 49ers’ off-season program is not going to be about taking to the practice field. Rather, it’s going to be all about studying.
“So those are things that I’m looking at when I’m watching film (and) those are things that Kyle obviously preaches to us and wants us to be great at. I love it. I’m hammering away at that stuff,” Brock Purdy said.
While things remain largely unsettled from a quarterback perspective in San Francsico, the team’s brass is not in a hurry to make a decision. Sportsnaut NFL insider Benjamin Allbright reported on Friday that the 49ers’ brass is alright with this extending to training camp and the preseason.
