Reigning NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers seem to have come to terms on somewhat of a compromise after months of drama between the two sides.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that Rodgers, 37, will report to Packers training camp this week. Said report indicates that a restructured contract is in place between the future Hall of Fame quarterback and his organization.

While details of said restructure are not 100% known, there’s a few bullet points to look at.

  • Rodgers’ contract with the Packers would be adjusted with no loss of salary in 2021. However, the deal would give Green Bay more cap room to work with heading into the season.
  • According to Schefter, the Packers have agreed to review Rodgers’ situation after the 2021 season.
  • As it relates to the 2023 season, that year would be voided in the Aaron Rodgers contract restructure — setting up the possibility that he leaves Green Bay following the 2021 campaign.
  • No franchise tags are allowed moving forward.

What this means for Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers

Aaron Rodgers contract demands

As Schefter noted in his report, the Packers were able to change Rodgers’ mind over the weekend. The future Hall of Fame quarterback was apparently ready to sit out the entire 2021 season rather than play for Green Bay.

Meanwhile, NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport had this to report regarding the restructure.

“The reworked deal for Aaron Rodgers includes him having a say in his future in 2022 and 2023,” the NFL insider noted.

All of this comes after reports suggested during the spring that Rodgers wanted to be traded. He listed the San Francisco 49ers, Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders as preferred landing spots. Mike Klis of 9 News in Denver added another layer to this once news of Aaron Rodgers’ contract restructure became public record.

“Per sources, Broncos had monitored Rodgers drama this offseason but never engaged in talks w/Packers, who consistently sent message they wouldn’t trade MVP,” Klis noted.

General manager Brian Gutekunst and the Packers pushed back against dealing the multi-time NFL MVP. As training camp approached, it was obvious the two sides were not close to coming to terms on some sort of a compromise. Obviously, that changed over the weekend.

All of this comes on the heels of what promises to be an interesting season for Aaron Rodgers and the Packers. There’s now a good chance that this will, in fact, be his “last dance” in Wisconsin.

Remember, it was back in April of 2020 that the Packers traded up for fellow quarterback Jordan Love in the first round of the NFL Draft. Among other things, that’s one of the reasons Rodgers became disillusioned with the suddenly embattled Packers organization.

Green Bay will now run it back with Rodgers in 2021 with hopes that he’s able to lead the team to Super Bowl contention. After that, it’s anyone’s guess what will happen between the two sides. For now, the months of drama we’ve seen in Wisconsin has come to a conclusion with roughly six weeks before Green Bay kicks off its 2021 season against the New Orleans Saints.
