NFL MVP odds 2024: Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Joe Burrow start as favorites

The 2023 NFL season ended with Lamar Jackson winning his second NFL MVP in just six seasons of play. When the 2024 season kicks off, Jackson will look to become the seventh player to win three MVPs, but not if others like Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, and Joe Burrow can get in the way.

Even though it’s the offseason, we’re already looking ahead to the 2024-25 NFL MVP betting odds, which features primarily quarterbacks. This is because the last time a non-QB won NFL MVP was in 2012 when Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson took home the honors.

NFL MVP odds 2024-25: Breaking down biggest favorites

• Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs: With three career NFL and Super Bowl MVPs, it’s no surprise that Mahomes is mentioned here again. He’s an annual threat to lead the NFL in passing yards and touchdowns while keeping the Chiefs in first place. Perfect formula to win, but he needs to get more help from his pass-catchers.

• Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills: Boasting a tantalizing combination of arm talent plus escapability, Allen is certainly one of the best young QBs in football. But he hasn’t been able to limit his turnovers enough to win MVP, yet he has the capability to do so in the future. While Allen finished as the NFL’s touchdown leader, now he doesn’t have Stefon Diggs by his side, which makes him a risky betting option.

• Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals: Injuries have slowed Burrow’s progress in two out of his four NFL seasons, he’s one of the best QBs in the NFL. If the Bengals’ offense gets back on track, why can’t Burrow win his first MVP?

• C.J. Stroud, Houston Texans: If Stroud can lead what was perceived to be a ‘bad’ Texans team to the playoffs in his first year as a rookie when he didn’t even know what he was doing, imagine what he can do once he becomes a seasoned vet with an even better supporting cast?

• Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens: While injuries got in the way of Jackson’s success in the past, he has since shown that there aren’t any long-term concerns. Few quarterbacks are more dangerous with the ball in their hands than the two-time NFL MVP winner.

• Jordan Love, Green Bay Packers: Three years of sitting on the bench sparked a fire in Love’s heart that has yet to go out. The first-year starter brought the Packers to the playoffs in his first year. Imagine what he can do with his newfound confidence.

• Brock Purdy, San Francisco 49ers: No one had Purdy on their list of MVP candidates after he got drafted, but he’s helped the 49ers return to Super Bowl contenders. As long as he can keep leading the 49ers to victory, Purdy will remain a prime candidate to win MVP.

• Justin Herbert, Los Angeles Chargers: Now that Herbert is paired with an offensive-minded head coach, we should see Jim Harbaugh get more out of the Chargers’ franchise QB than ever before. Boasting one of the biggest arms in the NFL, along with plenty of mobility, Herbert should be viewed as a legit MVP candidate.

• Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia Eagles: Hurts took a big step forward as a passer in 2022, and if it weren’t for his injury, he might have won MVP. The same rushing numbers weren’t there in 2023, and he appeared to take a step back through the air too. We’ll see if he can get back on track this year, but with his dual-threat ability, it’s no surprise to see him listed as a top candidate.

• Dak Prescott, Dallas Cowboys: After being tied for throwing the most interceptions in 2022, Prescott’s story was much different in 2023. While the Cowboys dominated many of their opponents, Prescott didn’t have to pass as much as his peers, yet he still put up some of the most impressive numbers anyway and is a bonafide MVP candidate in the future too.

• Tua Tagovailoa, Miami Dolphins: What if Tagovailoa hadn’t suffered multiple concussions in 2022? We’ll never know what could have been, but he still led the NFL in touchdown rate, yards per attempt, and QB rating. Tagovailoa continued his strong play in 2023, and as long as he has Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, he should be viewed as a legitimate candidate to win MVP.

• Christian McCaffrey, San Francisco 49ers: Can McCaffrey become the first running back to win MVP since Adrian Peterson did so in 2012? As the leader of the 49ers’ offense, CMC’s candidacy to win an MVP in the future is very real.

• Tyreek Hill, Miami Dolphins: Can a wide receiver win MVP? It’s never happened before, but prior to his injury Hill was on track to become the first pass-catcher to record a 2,000-yard season. His impact on the Dolphins’ offense can not be ignored. But can he have a better year than the top QBs? That’s a question voters will have to consider.

Bottom line: As we saw last season, the MVP race doesn’t truly take shape until the final stretch of the season, when playoff teams start becoming established.

When will the 2025 NFL MVP be announced?

Last year, Jackson was announced as the league’s MVP for the 2023-24 season on Feb. 9, which took place two days before the Super Bowl.
